High tides damage Cunha sluice doors

High tides on Monday damaged the doors at the Cunha sluice on the East Bank of Demerara and the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA) has been working to rectify the problem.

A release from the Ministry of Agriculture said that water from the Demerara River was seeping below and through sections of the sluice doors. The NDIA was said to have already mobilized materials and other supplies to undertake emergency works and to avoid major intrusion of salt water.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Public Works and Commu-nication-Works Services Group/Defence Division is advising the public to take the necessary precautions during the spring tide period from September 20-27.

According to data provided, the high tide is expected to reach 2.91 (m CD) at 3:21 today and 2.86 (m CD) at 3:30 pm.  Tomorrow at 3:55 am the tides are expected to reach 2.93 (m CD) and at 3:55 in the afternoon the projected height is 2.92 (m CD). On Friday, at 4:29 am water is expected to reach a height of 2.92 (m CD) while at 4:20 pm the projected height is 2.95 (m CD).

At 5:03 am on Saturday, the projected water height is 2.87 (m CD) and at 4:47 pm the level is expected to be 2.95 (m CD).  On the following day, the projected levels at 5:36 am and 5:17 pm are 2.79 (m CD) and 2.91 (m CD), respectively. On Monday at 6:11 am, the high tide is expected to reach a height of 2.66 (m CD) and at 5:50 pm, 2.84 (m CD).
