Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, (MCYS) Dr. Frank Anthony is encouraging the Neighbouring Democartic Councils (NDC’s) and the municipalities to put systems in place so as to identify schools and communities which have excelled in sports.
The minister made the announcement at the closing ceremony of Sunday’s Day of Interaction in Berbice.
According to a release , the event which was held at port Mourant Community Centre Ground, in collaboration with the National Sports Commission and the Region Six administration, was well attended.
According to the release, the event was attended by athletes, officials, supporters, government ministers and regional officers from all parts of the region.
The programme began with a march-past around the Port Mourant Community Centre Ground at 9.30am which involved athletes and officials along with 16 NDCs and three Region Six Municipalities.
Witnessing the march-past was Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, Alfred King, Director of Sport, Neil Kumar, Regional Chairman, Zulfikar Mustapha, Regional Culture, Youth and Sport Officer, Omeshwar Sirikishun, other regional officers and Member of Parliament and PPP General Secretary, Donald Ramotar.
Also gracing the activity was Minister of Home Affairs, Clement Rohee.
The winner of the 18-team male softball cricket competition was Whim/Bloomfield NDC who defeated Madia/Tarlogie NDC in a close final.
Port Mourant Training Centre defeated Jaguars of Port Mourant in the final of the volleyball competition with Letter Kenny taking the third position.
Some 20 players including one female, participated in the table tennis competition which was held in two categories. Brydon Murray won the junior category by defeating Joshua Lalbachan while Shurwain Sahdeo defeated Ian Bagot in the senior category.
The lone female, Geneane Kellman received a special prize.
Former national chess champion Kriskal Persaud won the chess competition from Dane Grimmond while No. 28 Bush Lot/Adventure emerged winners of the 14-team domino competition with Macedonia/ Joppa, second.
Corriverton Town Council defeated Port Mourant Training Centre in the six-team circle tennis competition and, after
a lengthy competition Mahadeo Seusankar emerged victorious in the draughts competition.
In track and field, Melissa Albert won the female Open 800m event from Toneisha Solomon and Geleica Stanley while Solomon and Stanley were first and second respectively in the 1500 metres Open.
Pierre Tello won the male Open 800m event from Dwayson Watson and James Rahaman respectively while Arsenio Gray was unchallenged in the male 1500m Open event.
Port Mourant NDC won prizes for the best banner, uniformity and the largest contingent during the march past.
Trophies were awarded to the winners and runners-up of the various events while sports equipment were also distributed to top performers, clubs and communities, the release stated.
