A young painter accused of stealing a gold chain from a man was yesterday admitted to bail in the sum of $125,000 when he appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
It is alleged that on July 21 at Georgetown, Dwayne Wharton, 18, of Parfait Harmonie, West Bank Demerara, stole one gold chain valued $180,000, property of Lloyd Roberts.
The defendant pleaded not guilty.
Prosecutor Stephen Telford told the court that on the day in question the virtual complainant entered a shop and placed the chain on a counter.
According to Telford, the defendant who is known to the complainant later entered the shop and after succeeding in distracting Roberts, removed the chain and made good his escape.
The prosecutor said that since the incident, it was only recently that the police were able to capture Wharton.
The prosecution had no objection to Wharton being granted his pretrial liberty but requested that it be in a substantial amount.
The accused was later granted bail to the tune of $125,000, and ordered to return to court on October 27 for statements.
