A 16-year-old pedal cyclist of Bath Experiment Housing Scheme, West Coast Berbice is nursing multiple abrasions about his body after he was struck down by a car around 7 am on Tuesday.
Tekchan Hansraj was rushed to the Fort Wellington Hospital where his condition was listed as stable. The driver of the vehicle who is said to be from Mahaicony was taken into police custody.
Reports are that Hansraj rode out of a street, turned onto the public road and was struck down by the car, PLL 3412 that was proceeding east.
This newspaper learnt that the driver claimed the boy turned into his path but relatives claimed he was in the corner of the road. According to an eyewitness, the car “dipped” the boy off the road and drove about 100 ft with him on top. When the car came to a halt he rolled off and persons said that “if he was not on top of the car he coulda get killed.”
When this newspaper spoke to relatives at the hospital they were concerned about his injuries and were making arrangements to take him to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
They said that along with the wounds about his body he also suffered head injuries and was bleeding through his right ear. But according to a doctor, the wounds to the lad’s head were “mild.”
His mother, Kamlawattie ‘Sattie’ Hansraj told Stabroek News that her son had just left home when she received the news that he was involved in an accident.
By the time she got to the scene, though he was already taken to the hospital. She said her brother, who lives nearby heard the impact and when he looked he saw his nephew lying on the road and immediately ran out to his assistance.
She said her brother picked him up and stopped a passing car which took the boy, the second of three siblings to the hospital.
