Repeat abuser Ravie Persaud of Hampshire Village, Corentyne was yesterday sentenced to three months imprisonment, after he confessed to a charge of assault, committed on his wife Kamla.
Imposing the sentence at the Albion Court, Magistrate Tejnarine Ramroop, pointed to the nexus between alcohol and domestic violence, which sometimes leads to murder.
Police Prosecutor Inspector Satrohan Dayaram told the court that Persaud was previously charged with a similar offence, also committed on his wife of 12 years, and had been placed on a bond to keep the peace for six months.
“You have not learnt your lesson,” the magistrate told Persaud. “I have no alternative, but to impose the sentence sanctioned by law.”
The court heard that on September 18 around 17:00 hrs, the virtual complainant was at home, when her husband who was intoxicated, accused her of being unfaithful. An argument arose, during which he dealt her several slaps. The matter was reported to the Rose Hall Police Outpost.
