Magistrate Krishndat Persaud on Thursday sentenced a labourer to eight years imprisonment after he admitted to trafficking in cocaine and possession of marijuana.
The charges read to Roy Moore, 43, of Kingston, Corriverton at the Springlands Court were that on September 21, he had in his possession 33 grammes of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking and 5.5 grammes of cannabis sativa.
Police Prosecutor Sergeant Michael Grant told the court that around 10:10 am on the day in question, police, acting on information, went to Moore’s home, where he was seen acting in a suspicious manner. The officers conducted a search and the drugs were found in his pants pocket.
Before the penalty was imposed, Moore told the magistrate he is a father of four and begged for leniency. Magistrate Persaud nevertheless sentenced him to five years imprisonment and fined him $495,000 on the cocaine trafficking charge and three years in jail for possession of marijuana with a fine of $10,000. Both sentences will run concurrently.
