PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – Marquee all-rounder Dwayne Bravo says he will clear the air shortly on why he turned down a central retainer contract from the West Indies Cricket Board.
The West Indies vice-captain was one of two players, along with fellow Trinidadian Kieron Pollard, who opted not to sign on as contracted players.
“Right now, I have just returned home from South Africa and I am a bit tired,” Bravo said on his return from the Champions League Twenty20 where he represented Mumbai Indians.
“I know that it is something that I have to deal with in terms of responding and after consultation with my people, I will issue a press release soon to give an explanation to the public.”
Bravo and Pollard were the only two of 15 players who snubbed the WICB’s offer of retainer contracts. It is believed they will take their chances at becoming freelance cricketers and shopping their skills around.
They already play in the most lucrative domestic leagues around the world, with both holding contracts in Australia, the Indian Premier League and England.
Captain Chris Gayle also failed to sign the contract by the September 10 deadline but wrote the WICB asking for an extension which was granted.
In all, 22 players including the 10 offered developmental contracts, have all signed on, paving the way for the cream of West Indies players to be available for international duty.
