Dave Martin & the Tradewinds for 2010 Sunshine Awards Hall of Fame

Dave Martin and the Tradewinds will be inducted into the 2010 Sunshine Awards Hall of Fame next month when recognition is paid to outstanding performers and groups in the Caribbean region.

The committee behind event will host the 22nd Annual Sunshine awards on October 23 in New York City. Since its establishment in 1989 the committee has been handing out accolades to regional performers.

The Tradewinds, led by Martin, has been tipped for the honour after decades of timeless songs and a critical role in the development of Caribbean music. The Sunshine committee referred to the band as one of the most revered groups in the region which has been at the forefront of popular Caribbean music for years.

According to a press release from the committee, the Tradewinds is a unique group which became part of Caribbean life. The committee referred to some Tradewinds classics which included, “Honeymooning Couple”, “West Indian Alphabet”, “Old Time Calypso”, “In Guyana” and “Not A Blade of Grass” among others.

The original Tradewinds members are Dave Martin, Clive Rosteing, Harry Cupid, Jeff Japal and Richard Terry. Other members now deceased are the original drummer, Kelvin Ceballo and guitarist Glen Sorzano.

Among the other inductees are Bill Trotman (T&T); Norman Adams (T&T) and Alfred ‘Sacks’ Mayers (T&T). Nominees for the awards this year are Dance Africa (Barbados); Vves Joseph of Tabou Combo (Haiti); Drupatee Persad (T&T); Sonny Blacks (England); Dorbrene O’Marde (Antigua) among others.
