Dear Editor,
According to the Guyana Chronicle, Saturday, September 25, President Jagdeo, speaking at the United Nations on Friday, said the United Nations needs to establish global accountability indicators to assess whether the implementation of policies is in accordance with the international responsibilities.
He added that there is need for enhanced accountability so that countries can act responsibly, rather than merely with regard for national interests. Who wrote that speech and handed it to him? The UN Secretary General? His advice to the UN is exactly what his government needs to heed, be-cause they lack transparency, which is integral to accountability, and they govern with their own interests in mind and without regard for Guyanese or the international community.
The UN is against human rights violations, yet there exists a report of a Phantom Squad that was allegedly operated with the knowledge of some government officials and in which hundreds are reported dead without recourse to justice, but the Jagdeo regime refuses to agree to a probe of the operation.
The government is not in compliance with the UN human rights protocol, yet the President gets to make a speech there about accountability?
Well, if Mahmoud Ahmadinjejad could make a speech at the UN, why shouldn’t President Jagdeo?
After all, Guyana has signed an agreement for Iran to map Guyana’s soil for minerals, including uranium, so these birds of a feather that flock together deserve each other, but do we deserve to be saddled with their wacky reasoning?
Yours faithfully,
Emile Mervin
