Dear Editor,
In the not too distant past, I wrote a letter to the press extolling the pre-paid metering system, and encouraging Guyanese to go for it. I still believe in the principle and philosophy of it, but the entire advertising campaign of GPL, all the PR work, has come to naught, I am ashamed to say. The campaign definitely was a waste of money.
Imagine, since July 8, 2010 I requested the installation of a pre-paid meter at 77 Queen Street, and to date it is all confusion and comedy. The paperwork went missing and then they said they failed to take my number. It was given to them, but they still did not have it. After a long time, I called, and after numerous calls I finally got them. They said they knew the name but decided to file it and wait for me to make contact. I guess this way of conducting business goes with an inept monopoly.
After a letter in the press castigating the demand for money by some GPL technicians and contractors, someone turned up with a lot of nonsensical questions. I called and my secretary called, and now they are trying to assert something – who was there before, and such nonsense. My relative recently acquired the place, and I manage it for her.
Prepaid meters are something that GPL is encouraging along with the donor entity. In principle this is good, but in reality, GPL is making it a joke.
Yours faithfully,
Roshan Khan
