Twenty-one persons in Region Seven have now been trained and certified in Red Cross Standard First Aid after completing a course facilitated by the charity.
In a press release the Guyana Red Cross Society (GRCS) said the most of the participants were from Bartica while four were from Kurutuku. The sessions were held from September 17 to 19 at the Lions Den as part of the Red Cross’ branch development programme.
Facilitator Norma Hamilton noted that the GRCS is open to all persons who can find a niche that can benefit from their skills. She said such cooperation is responsible for “The mobilization of beneficiaries, volunteers and donors.”
The release said eight persons volunteered to form the nucleus of a branch development committee and several others have signed on as volunteers for continued work in the community.
The interim community will be led by Irene Pereira who will be tasked with developing strategies for raising the profile of the Red Cross across the region as well as with developing new activities that align with the charity’s goals.
In addition, the GRCS Secretary-General Dorothy Fraser said that volunteers will also have the opportunity to take full ownership and to be responsible for working closely with other regional initiatives including resource development initiatives, providing leadership and development for Red Cross youth programmes.
Regional Chairman Holbert Knights said he was pleased with the network developed through the first aid training and the youth unit organised.
