Trinidad union marches
Trinidad’s largest trade union took to the streets yesterday demanding better wages for their workers.
Scores of Public Service Association members marched through the streets of Port of Spain, calling for a minimum wage rise of TT$6,000 (US$1,000) a month for all workers.
They have accused the Kamla Persaud-Bissessar administration of ignoring their demands since coming to office four months ago. Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar is attending the United Nations General Assembly in New York this week.
Jamaican public officers strike
Hundreds of public health workers in Jamaica staged industrial action yesterday to protest the government’s failure to pay outstanding wages.
Officials from the ministry of labour have been meeting with the workers in an attempt to settle the dispute.
But the workers say they have no plans of going back on the job until the government sets a date for payment.
Vice president of the Jamaica Confederation of Trade Unions Robert Chung said government has failed to meet previous commitments for settling the monies owed.
A statement from the Ministry of Health said it was unaware of the reasons for the latest round of industrial action.
