Dear Editor,
As at 24th instant I have screened over 100 applications to fill an advertised vacancy for clerk/receptionist in my organization. I am shocked at what are deemed as passes at CSEC and I would like the relevant ministry to examine more closely the region’s CSEC curriculum and its relevance to the world of work.
Here are a few observations:
a) Grades 4 and 5 are regarded as passes.
b) Many applicants achieved up to a Grade 3 pass in English but the ‘English’ in their applications is frightening.
c) Many applications are not dated or signed.
d) Many applications carry no source (home) address.
e) Put to do an IQ test applicants with passes in 9 subjects achieved less than 50% in the IQ test.
f) It appears to me that those who passed CSEC in 2009 displayed greater ‘savvy’ than the 2010 CSEC graduates.
Some other disappointing aspects of today’s applicants for employment are:
a) lateness to interviews;
b) mode of dress for interviews;
c) very casual deportment at interviews.
I have discussed my experience with other private sector employers and many empathized with my views.
The big question is: Are our high school (or perhaps university) graduates of the mettle to contribute in a positive way to this nation?
I see total mediocrity in a decade hence, our education system included.
Yours faithfully,
T Jadunauth
