Miss Republic was again unstoppable on Sunday when she galloped to victory in the feature B class event of the Ryan Crawford Memorial Turf Club and Sport Facilities annual Champion of Champion horse race meet at Alness, Corentyne, Berbice.
Miss Republic of the Colin Elcock Stable and mounted by Daniel Flores continued its dominance this year taking away the $400,000 top prize along with the Banks DIH trophy in the 1300m race.
Stable mate Delmur Gold, finishing fast, took second ahead of Night Crescendo of the Crawford Stable and Pinch de Cash for fourth place.
Kumar Singh in the saddle of Gen’s Pride took care of the field in the three-year-old event for animals bred and born in Guyana and the West Indies from old rival Peaceful of the Elcock Stable. It won $300,000 and the Norman Singh Memorial Turf Club trophy for the 1300m race. Rounding out the top spots were Stormy Lass and Got to Go respectively.
Rumours Racing Stable chalked up another win when Tropical Passion raced away with the Guyana Livestock and Pet Shop trophy and the $220,000 in the E3 race. Ridden by Kumar Singh, the animal emerged from the pack to win from Mamzelle, Face the Music and Sweet Revenge.
Apostle, of the Wayne Nelson Stable, won the two-year-old race for Guyana-bred horses over in the 1100m sprint event. The win was worth $180,000 with Kevin, Water Wave and Sped Vision rounding out the money.
Stormy Deal of the Romel Jagmohan Stable was another winner that breezed to victory in the G class event in which the winner took $150,000 and the Sham Chattergoon trophy. The horse was ridden by Navin Ally, who ensured his horse came in ahead of Face the Music, Pegasus Rising and Got to Go.
Casino Royale returned to royalty with a win in the H2 1200m event, which had a winning purse of $140,000 along with the Chen Singh trophy. The other top finishers were Dream Girl, Stormy Water and Amy Jane.
Meanwhile, the day was not without controversy in the I-2 and Lower 1400m race. With a full box of 12 horses competing, Spread the News and Channel Boy were close when they crossed the finish line but patrons were unhappy that the judges awarded the race to Spread the News of the Leary Robinson Stable.
Miami Vice and Savion rounded out the money for the $120,000 top prize and the Ray’s Auto Spares trophy. Black Beauty of the Collins Stable won the J class 1200m event from Try again as it took the $90,000 and the Bobby Vaughn trophy.
In the end the Elcock Stable took the top stable prize while jockey Kumar Singh, with four wins, was adjudged champion rider.
There were some 65 horses on show with prize monies worth over $3.5M in cash and other takings being available. A minute of silence was observed for the late Lillian Crawford, wife of Senior Counsel and founding member of the RCMTC&SF, Marcel Crawford.
