A man wanted by police for questioning into several crimes on the East Coast of Demerara, yesterday opened fire on several policemen who turned up at his mother’s Bachelor’s Adventure home in search of him.
Following an exchange of gunfire, the man, who was released from prison two months ago, managed to evade capture. According to Divisional Commander Gavin Primo, the fugitive may be injured.
Assistant Commissioner Primo told Stabroek News that the man had been released from prison after the case against him was discharged. “His name kept popping up and there was evidence that he might be behind some criminal activities,” Primo explained.
This newspaper was told that several policemen turned up at the Bachelor’s Adventure address of the fugitive’s mother sometime after 5 am in search of the man and they came under fire. None of the policemen were injured during the shootout.
Meanwhile, an elderly resident of the East Coast Demerara village said that early yesterday morning he heard three or four explosions that sounded like gunshots. The man said that because of his age he did not venture outside to investigate. He noted that he knows that the man’s mother lived at the back of the community but he has not seen the man for several months.
