The supervisor held in connection with a multi-million dollar fraud at the Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry (GBTI) has been released on station bail as the investigation into the case continues.
Crime Chief Seelall Persaud confirmed the supervisor’s release.
Stabroek News understands that the GBTI employee was released over the weekend after spending several days in police custody. Persaud was unable to say how much money is involved in the fraud.
He had told this newspaper last week that the bank is still to ascertain the extent of the fraud and when it occurred.
This newspaper was informed by sources that the figure could be as high as $75 million and involves the accounts of a local money transfer entity.
Persaud has explained that while the amount involved could not be ascertained, bank officials did find enough evidence of a fraud to report the matter to the police and this led to the arrest of the employee. GBTI has not commented on the case.
