-plot of land earmarked for association to build own facility
The Guyana Table Tennis Association’s (GTTA) development plan will be boosted over the next two years by an injection of over five million dollars from the sport ministry.
According to a release from the GTTA, Dr. Frank Anthony, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, gave his ministry’ commitment to give over five million dollars to the GTTA for the schools table tennis development programme over the next two years.
The money is to be used additionally in helping the GTTA acquire the STAG table tennis equipment grant; the running off of coaching programmes; staging seminars for players, officials and administrators country wide; coaching; competitions for schools and the purchase of trophies, the release stated.
President of the GTTA Henry Greene also lobbied Dr. Anthony for assistance to build/acquire a facility specifically for table tennis.
Greene argued that a home for the sport was necessary given the intense competition for the use of the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
He also suggested that of critical importance for such a facility, was the fact that the GTTA would be able to hosting more international events which would lead to an increase in foreign exchange coming into the country.
Dr. Anthony, the release stated, said that he would be happy to partner with the association in the realization of a table tennis facility.
The minister then stated that the GTTA can benefit from a plot of land to construct a table tennis specific facility at the Non Pariel Woolford Avenue facility next to the squash courts.
Greene said he would love to immediately undertake such a venture and indicated that he would like for the Memorandum of Agreement /contract between the two entities be crafted for perusal and agreed upon so that the GTTA can get into action.
