Samuel Ming, Roger Peroune and Keith Beaton emerged as the Guyana Karate Federation (GKF) 2010 Adult Champions after the kata and kumite contests of the GKF’s Open Adult Tournament held on Sunday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
Top junior karetekas were allowed to participate in the adult kata individual and team events of the tournament and this saw current Caribbean under-17 kata gold medalist, Ming taking the gold in the final of the Male Adult Individual kata event after defeating seasoned adult campaigner, Patrick Cheeks.
The other junior Eric Hing also performed well and took the bronze from Liam Wong after losing to Cheeks in the semi-final. Ming defeated Liam Wong in the other semi-final.
Later Ming, Cheeks and Kyle Isaacs of YMCA, who teamed up for team kata, were edged out by the team of Guy Low, Hing and Peroune of the Guyana Karate College.
The individual kumite saw the emergence of a new champion in the under 75kgs class when Peroune overcame Delon Thourne to take the gold, while Manzoor Ali defeated Jason Jerrick for the bronze.
In the heavier over 75kgs class, the experienced Beaton captured the gold from Cheeks in the final. Issacs went on to win the bronze over Malcom Francis.
