Armed bandits storm energy agency

-tie up guards, steal fuel markers

Four masked gunmen stormed the Guyana Energy Agency (GEA) head office on Quamina Street yesterday morning and after tying up two female guards and holding them at gunpoint, escaped with containers of fuel markers.

Police are reviewing the footage from security cameras to help track down the perpetrators. The markers are usually added to legitimately imported fuel and smugglers could use them to mask illegal imports.

Head of the GEA, Mahender Sharma when reached said that a press release would be issued on the matter. Up to late yesterday afternoon, the promised release had not been received.

According to the reports reaching Stabroek News, the quartet invaded the compound around 3 am, holding one guard who was at the front of the compound at gunpoint before taking another to the back of the compound and tying her up.

The men then proceeded to the bond where they cut the chain and padlock that secured the door.

A senior police officer said that the men fled with two containers of fuel markers. He said that no one has yet been caught but investigators are reviewing camera footage.

The female guards, this newspaper understands, were forced to remain at their post until their relief came some four hours later. However, neither woman was physically harmed, Stabroek News was told.
