A four-member delegation from Suriname and French Guiana touched down at the Ogle airstrip yesterday to finalise arrangements for the upcoming second leg of the Inter-Guiana Games which will be held in Guyana from November 18-21.
Earlier, Director of Sports Neil Kumar had a meeting at the National Sports Commission (NSC) with the local IGG Committee.
Speaking to Stabroek Sport yesterday via telephone, Kumar who is chairman of the committee said they met at “his office for a detailed meeting.”
In addition to Kumar, the committee includes the Guyana Amateur Swimming Association Secretary Dr Karen Pilgrim, who is also General Manager of the IGG Games, Guyana Cycling Federation President Hector Edwards, Team Manager of the IGG basketball team Chris Bowman, Vice-President of the Guyana Amateur Basketball Association Floyd Levi and Vice-President of the Guyana Volleyball Federation Vaughn Burnette.
“We had a detailed meeting to work out the final preparations for the IGG teams,” Kumar stated. Based on what was discussed during the meeting Kumar noted that he was “very happy with the preparations the teams have been making.” “I think the preparation is very adequate,” Kumar added.
According to Kumar, the Suriname and French Guiana delegations are made up of two members each, with Suriname’s Director of Sports Michael Watson heading the Surinamese delegation and French Guiana’s Tracy Travesie serving as the head of the French delegation.
“I think we have everything covered and we are fully prepared for the activity, but the delegation from the two countries is just coming to finalise the arrangements for the second leg of the games,” Kumar said.
Other than a scheduled meeting at the NSC with the Director to “look at IGG protocol and the second leg’s agenda”, the four members of the delegation from the two countries will inspect the incoming team’s accommodation and competition facilities and venues, along with aspects of transportation and security.
“Basically we [IGG committee] are just bringing them [delegation] up to speed with what we are doing and what we have been doing in preparation for the IGG games,” Kumar explained.
The delegation will be departing Guyana on Monday.
The second leg of the IGG games will see the host nation going up against male and female teams from Suriname and French Guiana in basketball, volleyball and cycling.
The basketball and volleyball tournaments will be held at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, while the cycling time trials are scheduled for the National Park and the road race will be held in West Demerara.
