Eighteen-year-old Aasieya Husain, a Guyanese by birth, was crowned Miss India DC on September 18 at the Betts Theatre in Washington, DC.
Husain competed against other contestants from Washington, Virginia and Maryland Metro area in four segments – evening gown, Indian dress, talent and Q&A. For her Indian dress, she wore a gold and burgundy Lehenga Choli with matching accessories, while her evening gown was described as long and elegant with spaghetti straps with rhinestone detail with a flowing tail at the back. For her talent piece, she danced to an Aaja Nachle song.
Aasieya is a first-year student at Marymount University who is currently pursuing her undergraduate degree in Business Administration. She enjoys performing and volunteering for nonprofit organisations in her free time. Further, she enjoys travelling, meeting new people and learning about their cultures.
Her motivation for entering the pageant was her passion for fashion and the opportunity to showcase her culture as well as meet new friends. The show was organised and promoted by Neena Bhaskar and Sibtain Kazmi who have been involved in it for the past 16 years.
Meanwhile, Aasieya, who is also the reigning 2010 Miss Teen Virginia Top Model will compete in the Miss India USA in New York next year.
