A mid-morning game of football came to an abrupt end yesterday when a One Mile Wismar man was shot while trying to be a peacemaker in an incident between his cousin and a policeman.
Kerwin Greene of 433 One Mile Wismar, Linden is currently a patient of the Georgetown Public Hospital nursing a gunshot wound to his left chest. His condition was listed as stable.
According to a police press release issued last night, about 10:30 hrs yesterday, Greene, 29, who allegedly was armed with a gun, was shot in his left upper chest during a scuffle with a member of the Guyana Police Force at Wismar, Demerara River.
Greene was taken to the Linden Hospital Complex for medical attention where he was admitted and was later transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital where his condition is regarded as serious but stable. A .38 revolver containing one live matching round, one snapped matching round and one spent shell are lodged in police custody as investigations are continuing, the release said.
According to eyewitnesses, Greene was enjoying a game of football when he realized that his cousin Mark Moses, 19, was involved in a confrontation with member of the police’s Tactical Services Unit. Reports said another man had accused Moses of disrespecting his girlfriend and had taken the policeman to him. “This whole thing was not necessary,” the eyewitness said. “De man bring dis police fuh confront Mark and it was whole big scene and dis show-off police pull he gun on dem man.” At the time of the incident the policeman was in civilian clothing.
Greene stepped in after the policeman slapped Moses in the face with his gun, reports said. “Kerwin rush up to them and was representing he cousin and de police pull he gun again and lick a shot straight to he chest,” another eyewitness said. “None a dem man didn’t had no weapon or so, but it was a lil heated argument. There was no need for shooting.”
According to a police source, no arrests have been made as yet and investigations are continuing.
