The Guyana Road Safety Council is appealing to road users to exercise caution and adhere to the traffic laws.
In a press release council said that almost everyday preventable accidents occur on the roads. It said there has been a significant increase in road accidents in Berbice in regions five and six. Pedestrians have also displayed sloppy and carefree attitudes when using the roads.
As at September 23 there were 77 accidents with 80 deaths; five were children. During the same period last year 71 accidents were recorded resulting in 82 deaths; 12 were children.
Major accidents result in the loss of lives, serious disability and almost all accidents have a great financial impact on the economy, the council noted. Many drivers also blatantly disregard the law and advisories against speeding, driving under the influence and flouting the traffic laws. They also continuously disregard the ‘Five Cs’ – care, courtesy, consideration, caution and commonsense. The council is urging all road users to be responsible when on the country’s roadways and to join its campaign to help stop the carnage on the roadways.
