The incumbent President of the World Chess Federation or FIDE, (Fédération Inter-nationale des Échecs), Kirsan Ilumzhinov, was re-elected on Wednesday to serve for another four years. Ilyumzhinov became president in 1995.
Ilyumzhinov campaigned under the banner headline, ‘One World. One Vision,’ and defeated his challenger Anatoly Karpov by 95 to 55 votes.
There were three abstentions. Karpov was the world champion of chess in the mid-seventies to mid-eighties. He captured the title in 1975 after Bobby Fischer failed to defend his crown which he had taken from Spassky three years earlier.
The election was held in Khanty Mansiysk, Russia, two days after a lawsuit filed by Karpov and five chess federations seeking to have Ilyumzhinov’s ticket disqualified was dismissed in the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne, Switzerland. The biennial Chess Olympiad is also currently being held in Khanty Mansiysk.
The principal officers who have been elected or re-elected to serve under Ilumzhinov’s stewardship are as follows: George Macropoulos of Greece, Deputy President; Lewis Ncube of Zambia, Vice Pre-sident; Beatriz Marinello of the US, Vice President; Ignatius Leong of Singa-pore, General Secretary; and Nigel Freeman of Bermuda, Treasurer.
