-pulled trigger thrice
Kerwin Greene, the Linden man shot by a policeman on Saturday remains hospitalized with internal bleeding and his shooter is expected to be charged.
Greene, 27, of 433 One Mile Wismar, Linden will undergo surgery to remove the bullet which is lodged in his back, his mother, Astra Moses told Stabroek News yesterday. She also said that contrary to a report in this newspaper, her son was not scuffling with the policeman when he was shot. “He had no gun, he had no scuffle, he had no contact with the boy that shoot he. He din even know that he was a police until later”, she said. The rank is attached to the police’s Tactical Services Unit.
Eyewitnesses had said that there was a heated argument while the police, in a statement said that there was a scuffle. The police statement said that at about 10:30 am on Saturday, Greene, who allegedly was armed with a gun, was shot in his left upper chest during a scuffle with a member of the Guyana Police Force at Wismar, Demerara River.
However, Moses told Stabroek News yesterday that Greene was in the house washing when his cousin, Mark Moses, ran inside and alerted him that he was hit by the policeman. She said that Mark said that the rank “box” him and asked him if he was the “mannish man” and if he could represent himself. “Mark tell he ‘yes, I could represent meself’ and with that he box him”, Moses said. This was when Mark ran into the house and alerted Greene and then went back outside, she said.
Moses said that her son followed him and the policeman was there with the gun in his hand. She said that the rank, who was in civilian clothes, was pointing the gun towards Mark. She said that her son then asked the policeman “how he gon come here and pointing gun to his lil cousin”. Moses said that the rank squeezed the trigger twice while aiming at Mark but the gun did not fire.
When he pulled the trigger for the third time, this time aiming at Greene, it fired, she said. The bullet hit Greene in his chest. Greene was over three feet away from the policeman at the time, Moses said. His four-year-old daughter was also in the yard at the time, she said.
“He ain’t had no fight with the boy. He ain’t touch he”, she stressed. “Me son never had no gun”. Moses said after the policeman fired the shot, he ran away.
Greene was taken to the Linden Hospital then transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was admitted. Moses said that due to the wound, Greene was bleeding internally and the doctors say that they will take out the bullet today. “They wukking on he bleeding cause he bleeding a lot”, she said.
Moses said that the police told her that the rank is under arrest and he was supposed to be transported to police headquarters at Eve Leary yesterday. She said that she was told that he would be charged. “I want justice in this story”, she said. “The police is not protecting the people”.
