The Guyana Marketing Corporation (GMC) has added two cold-storage trucks valued $10.4 million to its fleet to transport produce for export.
In a press release GMC said the agency has evolved over the years and is a key support system in the agriculture sector. “GMC no longer buys or sells agricultural commodities but supports and enables agribusiness development especially in the area of export marketing of non-traditional agricultural commodities,” it said.
In areas where the private sector is yet to develop infrastructure, the Ministry of Agriculture has been providing this service through its agencies and departments. Under its ‘Grow More Food Campaign’ the ministry has established two cold-storage facilities; one at Parika and the other in Sophia. The trucks will be used to transport produce from farmers, at a nominal fee, to the facilities, for export.
GMC said the trucks were financed under a non-reimbursable grant from the ALBA funds of the Venezuelan Government. It is part of a larger project titled ‘Improving the Cold Chain for Non-Traditional Agricultural Produce.
