In the latest edition of the General Marine Masters Cup and Female Softball Cricket tournament, the Well Woman softball team on Sunday registered two wins against the Corriverton Queens and the Trophy Stall Angels.
Playing with only eight of their members in what was a scheduled 11-a-side affair, the Well Woman first defeated the Queens by 55 runs, at the Police Sports Club (PSC) ground, Eve Leary, before returning to strike down the Angels by a 21-run victory at the Everest Cricket Club ground.
At Eve Leary, the Well Woman emerged with 79 all out after exhausting their allotted 10-over innings, while in reply the Queens were only able to squeeze 55 – 7 off their 10 overs.
Top scorer for the Well Woman team was Loyte Leacock, with 19 runs while their best bowlers were national cricketer, Sinead Emerson and Onika Wallison who took two wickets each. For the Queens Gizeal Batson was best with the ball, taking 2 wickets for 16 runs.
Sponsored by Mike’s Pharmacy at Everest, the Well Woman team climbed to 79 – 4 from 9.4 overs, before delivering the Angels all out for 58 runs off of 9.3 overs. Emerson this time led the batting side with an unbeaten 36 runs, teammate Joan Vansertima supported with 23 runs, while for the Angels Sabrina Stephenson with 14 runs was the only member able to notch up double figures.
In other matches at Everest, following their loss to the Well Woman at Eve Leary, the Queens returned to deliver a six-wicket win against the Ariel Divas. The Divas did well to get 77 – 8 from their 10 overs, and in a nail biting last ball victory Kamini Peters hit a four to take the Queens just within reach of their victory.
Peters had pooled a total of 23 runs to emerge as the top scorer. Other creditable displays came from Paula Williams (17) and Jasodra Singh (12).
Also ending the day on an even note was the Trophy Stall Angels, who had earlier cruised to a nine-wicket win over the 4R Lioness. Opening batting, 4R’s Shyon Goodluck’s 21 runs guided the team to 58 – 5, but the Angels replied with 62 -1 in six overs.
However, all together the day did not pan out well for the Divas who had suffered an earlier loss by seven wickets to the Crabwood Creek United (CCU) in one of the earlier matches at Eve Leary. Batting first the Divas stroked 59 – 5 off their allotted 10 overs, but in reply the CCU needed only half as many overs to mount 61 -3.
On the male side of the competition, a half century from Vijay Baljit impelled the Success XI team to a 60-runs win over the Everest softball team. Off 25 overs, Success made their way to 256 – 9, while in response Everest could only squeeze 196 -7 off their overs, despite a fighting 46 from Dhanpaul Ramnauth.
And in a male over-40 affair, Floodlights defeated Shattasville by 74 runs. Floodlights made 191 all out while Shattasville countered with only 117 all out.
