Cuban-born Dr Vilma Perez died early yesterday morning at the St Joseph Mercy Hospital following a brief period of hospitalization.
According to reports, Dr Perez, who was Associate Consultant at the Guyana Cancer Institute for many years, was rushed to the hospital at around 10pm on Tuesday and died around 1am yesterday morning with a friend at her bedside.
Stabroek News understands that the doctor, who in recent years was very vocal on the issue of cervical cancer and also worked at the St Joseph Mercy Hospital, only returned from Jamaica last week where she had gone to seek a job.
Her former husband, Schulder Griffith, when contacted yesterday said he was not in the “frame of mind” to comment on the woman’s death but said he would do so at the “appropriate time.”
