A woman accused of using a knife to rob another of a cell phone was on Monday remanded to prison when she appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
The allegation is that on October 3, being armed with a knife; Sharon Smith robbed Lochanie Narine of one cell phone valued $40,000 property of the said Lochanie Narine.
Initially, the accused pleaded guilty to the charge of robbery under arms when it was read to her. After supplying the court with her explanation however, the acting chief magistrate then entered a not guilty plea for the accused.
According to the defendant it was someone else who had stolen the phone and passed it onto her. A teary-eyed Smith repeatedly said that the complainant’s phone was returned to her. Prosecutor Lionel Harvey who presented the facts of the case said that on the day in question, the virtual complainant (VC) was walking along the streets when she was suddenly accosted by the accused who snatched the phone from her hands. The VC was not present at court.
Smith was subsequently remanded to prison until October 19.
