Jamaica’s Reggae Boys and Guyana’s Golden Jaguars under-20 teams will be aiming to continue their good run today after getting off to a terrific start in Group ‘C’ of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) World Cup qualifiers at the Guyana National Stadium on Wednesday.
At 5pm, the USVI (US Virgin Islands) will oppose the Jamaicans, then the feature match scheduled for 7 pm will involve host team Guyana and the Grenadians.
Guyana had a terrific run against the USVI team and attacked often in the opening minutes of the first half, much to the discomfort of the opposition whose defence could not contain the Guyanese forwards.
The USVI squad was evidently the weaker team on the night and Guyana exploited them through the flanks. Golden Jags drew first blood in the 14th minute, compliments of captain Colin Nelson who scored a penalty kick given when forward Telston McKinnon was fouled in the 18-yard box.
McKinnon recorded his team’s second goal in the 26th minute but the opposition pulled back one in the 35th minute from the penalty spot also through a goal scored by MacDonald Taylor.
The second half resumed with Eon Alleyne scoring in the 52nd minute after playing terrifically on the flanks.
McKinnon was substituted for Kevin Beaton and he was quickly on the ball and scored along with Sheldon Holder to account for Guyana’s other two goals.
Earlier in the evening, Jamaica were led by a Craig Foster hat-trick and he scored as early as the first minute of the game.
He went on to record goals in the 40th and 75 minutes and his teammate Neco Fraser scored in the 46th and 77th minutes while Alan Otty accounted for the next Jamaican goal.
Grenada’s Kamal scored Grenada’s lone goal in the 32nd which gave his team some hope since it was the equalizer.
