Women’s International Boxing Association (WIBA) bantamweight champion Shondell ‘Mystery Lady’ Alfred will be in the ring again on November 6 in the Caribbean Fury 2 at the Princess Hotel.
This was announced at the launching of the second annual Caribbean Fury card yesterday at the Princess Hotel.
The card, which will be held under the auspices of Holland’s Entertainment Promotion (HEP), will see Alfred fighting Olga ‘La Mona’ Julio of Colombia in a six-round non-title fight. Alfred last fought Corinne Van Ryck De Groot in a rematch for the WIBA bantamweight title in June at the Princess Hotel.
Alfred, 28, who fights with an orthodox stance, produced the most stunning knockout of the year in the fourth round to settle the bad blood that had developed between the two fighters after the inaugural Caribbean Fury in 2009.
‘Sexy Panther’ De Groot, who is also an actor and American gladiator, felt that she was robbed of the win in September 2009.
Alfred admitted at a press conference yesterday that the fight was offered to her a short time ago but said she will be using the bout as a warm-up for her unification bout early next year.
She also acknowledged that work in the gym has not been sustained since her win over De Groot but she promised that she will be in top shape for her encounter.
Alfred won 12 of her 17 fights with four wins coming by way of knockout. Julio on the other hand has won eight bouts, lost just as many and has one drawn contest.
The Colombian, 24, had a win against Omaria Suarez but lost to Ana Maria Torres for the World Boxing Council (WBC) super flyweight title when she last fought in July.
In 2008, southpaw Julio, fighting for her first professional titles, lost to Ana Fernandez for the World Boxing Association (WBA) Fedecaribe Minimumweight, WBA Fedebol Minimumweight and WIBA South American Mini Flyweight titles.
“This fight is a warm-up and I am sure it will be a good fight. To be honest since I beat De Groot I have been back and forth in the gym. Last week Mr. Holland called me and asked me if I wanted a warm-up fight and I said sure because I haven’t been in action since June.
“It will be a great fight and I am stepping up on training right now. As a fighter it is good to be active and this fight will be a stepping stone for me and as a champion there will be challenges. I want to prepare mentally and physically for any fighter even on such short notice. I am back in the gym and on the road pushing myself to be in top shape for the sixth of next month,” Alfred stated when asked whether it was a good decision to take the fight on such short notice and at this stage of her career.
She said that she is accustomed to fighting for 10 rounds and therefore going at it for six rounds will be a warm-up. She indicated that while she does not know the style of her opponent at this time, that will not be an issue since she will be going to fight.
“Knowing nothing about this girl is not an issue. Once she comes to Guyana to fight I will fight,” Alfred quipped.
The second Caribbean Fury, according to promoter and owner of HEP Carwyn Holland, will become a calendar event that will be designed to produce quality fights at an international venue. History was created on June 5 when Seon Bristol of Briso Promotions pulled off the first mega boxing promotion at a hotel in Guyana.
Headlining that card was ‘Deadly’ Denny Dalton against Puerto Rican Hector Camacho Jr. and next month world ranked Leon ‘Hurry Up’ Moore will appear in the feature bout against Breilor ‘Zulianito de Oro’ Teran of Venezuela in the super bantamweight division. Teran was the WBC FECARBOX super bantamweight champion before he lost that title to Giovanni Caro in July.
The 25-year-old Venezuelan won 12 fights, lost eight and drew one; four of his fights came via the knockout route. Moore, who is a southpaw, on the other hand, has only lost two of his 28 fights and will be fighting for a world title in the new year if he continues to win.
Also on that card will be Raul Frank against Kwesi Jones in the middleweight division, heavyweights Theophilus King will battle Mitchell Rogers, Joel Mc Rae will be going against James Walcott, Richard Reittie will challenge Mark Murray and Clive Atwell will be trading blows with Errol Trotman.
Admission to the venue will be $10,000 for VIP, $5,000 for ringside and regular seats will cost $3,000.
