A man who allegedly snatched a woman’s chain from her neck was yesterday remanded to prison when he appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
The allegation is that on October 7 at Georgetown, Joseph Barker stole a gold chain valued $267,000 from Latisha Mansfield. He pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Prosecutor Lionel Harvey told the court that on the day in question, the defendant, who is an acquaintance of the complainant, asked her to make a call on her cell phone.
As she was taking her cell phone out of her pocket, Harvey said, Barker snatched the chain from her neck and escaped.
An alarm was raised and the accused was apprehended.
The prosecution objected to Barker being admitted to bail on the grounds that there is a possibility he may flee the jurisdiction and not return to stand trial since he had given the police conflicting addresses.
The accused was later remanded to prison until October 28 for statements.
