Richard Ishmael Secondary School yesterday retained their title as Zone One Champions of the Inter-Schools Championships of the North Georgetown District.
Richard Ishmael ended on 421 points from the athletics event held yesterday at the GDF Ground to defeat Queen’s College Secondary with 358 points.
Marian Academy ended with 281 points while the Government Technical Institute (GTI), the only other participating school, walked off with 164 points.
Richard Ishmael’s feat in yesterday’s track events was underlined by a fine display from national athlete, Shamane Daniels. And while they finished in the cellar position, GTI received notable recognition from the competence exhibited by sprinters Lawrence Phillips and Andrew Jarvis.
Working in the girls’ under-16 category, Daniels captured the 100m, 200m, and 400m races. In the 100m and 400m, Daniels won from QC’s Yunessa Fredericks while in the 200m; second place went to another QC student in Celisa Deflorimonte.
The 3000m event was won by Avonela Springer while the 800m race saw QC’s Rushela Hanover and Angela Edwards taking the first two places respectively.
And in a stimulating 100m run dash, Phillips, in the boys’ under-20 category, dominated to the finishing line leaving QC’s Kareem Critchlow to take second place and his teammate Andrew Jarvis, third. However, Philips could not repeat the feat in the 200m as he was unable to find the strength to deal with eventual winner Carlwyn Collins of Queen’s College.
Colins also registered another masterful win in the 400m with Jarvis settling for a second place finish.
Over in the under-18 category, QC’s Neil Barry won the 100m, 200m, and 400m events. In the boys’ Open 4x100m the Queen’s College team seemed to have the race sewn up but Barry slipped while handing over the baton to anchor man Collins and the mishap was all that GTI needed to fuel their first place finish.
