Bina Hill youths in ‘350’ pledge

Youth Leaders from the Bina Hill Youth Learning Centre organised a special “350 learning by doing” activity for 300 indigenous secondary school students.

350 is the number that scientists say is the safe upper limit for carbon dioxide—measured in “Parts Per Million” in the atmosphere. 350 PPM is the number they believe the world needs to get back to as soon as possible to avoid runaway climate change. Presently the level is around 388 PPM.

According to a press release the interactive session was held at the Annai Secondary School and included exercises on the impact of climate change and global warming; the impact of climate change, global warming and natural disasters due to climate change and Guyana’s Low Carbon Development Strategy.

The students stand close together to form the number 350.

The students pledged to protect and wisely use the rainforest, savannahs and wetlands. “We believe our rain forests are more valuable standing tall and alive than [rather than] cut down and dead – and that alive they help protect the Earth from global warming,” they said. They also filmed the retreat to spread awareness throughout the North Rupununi District via the solar-powered Radio Paiwomak.
