Christ Church first form student, Jevina Sampson yesterday captivated all with her top quality performances in the girls’ under-14 category of the North Georgetown District Zone Two Inter-Schools Championships held at the GDF ground, Camp Ayanganna.
On a day that saw keen competition among national athletes, it was St John’s College with 494 points that emerged winner of the track events ahead of Bishops’ High School who ended with 418 points. Christ Church came in third in the points tally with 330 points; Guyana Education Trust College (GETC) was fourth with 174 points; Chase Academics Foundation stood at fifth with 170 points; and St Barnabus tied up things with 99 points.
And national athlete Shaquan Daniels secured some of the big points for St John’s through her participation in the under-16 category. Daniels, according to her sister Shamane Daniels, on Monday in the Zone One Championships came up with first place positions in the 100m, 200m, and 400m races.
Daniels led each race convincingly and her performance at the inter-zone meet on Friday is highly anticipated as she is expected to clash with her siblings.
For the 100m Bishops’ Kadija Andrews was able to capture a second place, while GETC’s Molissa Benjamin made it in for a third place finish. Benjamin also came back and got a first place win in the 800m race.
Sampson was dominant in the 400m and 800m races as well as in the girls open 4x100m relay. Earlier, the category’s 100m had been dominated by another national athlete, Bishops’ Ashley Tasher. And while much was anticipated in the clash between Sampson and Tasher in the 400m, spectators were left dissatisfied after Tasher left the event following her 100m race.
And in other displays of talent by a national athlete, St John’s Devon Barrington strutted his stuff in the boys under-18 category to capture wins in the 800m and 1,500m races. And Tamma Williams, also from St John’s, registered success in the 1,500m and 3,000m girls under-16 events, but lost out in the 800m since she missed the roll call for the athletes. The 800m was won by GETC’s Benjamin.
