Local boxers ink contracts for November 6 card; Judah, O’Neil and London added
Local boxers signed their contracts yesterday at the Princess Hotel amidst sweeping changes to the original roster.
Women’s International Boxing Association (WIBA) and Global Boxing Union (GBU) heavyweight champion Gwendolyn O’Neil, Josiah Judah, brother of former world champion Zab Judah, and Pamela London were added to the fight card earlier in the week, after the launch last week.
Yesterday Stabroek Sport found out that Leon ‘The Lion’ Gilkes and ‘Deadly’ Denny Dalton have also found places on the Caribbean Fury 2 card billed for November 6 at the Princess Hotel.
Efforts to contact promoter of the card Carwyn Holland of Holland’s Entertainment Promotion for some clarity were futile. It was learnt that Holland is not in the country. It is also not yet known how many bouts will actually be on the second edition of the card but Leon ‘Hurry Up’ Moore will headline the card against Breilor ‘Zulianito de Oro’ Teran of Venezuela in the super bantamweight division.
Teran was the WBC FECARBOX super bantamweight champion before he lost that title to Giovanni Caro in July. The 25-year-old Venezuelan has won 12 fights, lost eight and drew one. Four of his fights came via the knockout route.
Moore, who is a southpaw, has only lost two of his 28 fights and should be fighting for a world title in the new year if he continues to win.
It was also learnt from a source that Raul Frank will no longer be fighting against Kwesi ‘Lightning Struck Hitman’ Jones but rather against Dalton.
No reason was given for the change and it is not yet known who Gilkes will be going up against. Guyana’s first female world champion O’Neil will face London for the second time.
Other fights that were named at the launch are heavyweights Theophilus King against Mitchell Rogers, Joel Mc Rae fighting James Walcott, Richard Reittie will challenge Mark Murray and Clive Atwell will be trading blows with Errol Trotman.
Another barnburner should be with WIBA bantamweight champion Shondell Alfred fighting Olga ‘La Mona’ Julio of Colombia in a six-round non-title fight. Alfred last fought Corinne Van Ryck De Groot in a rematch for the WIBA bantamweight title in June at the Princess Hotel.
Alfred, 28, who fights with an orthodox stance, produced the most stunning knockout of the year in the fourth round of that fight to settle the bad blood that had developed between the two fighters after the inaugural Caribbean Fury in September of 2009.
Admission to the venue will be $10,000 for VIP, $5,000 for ringside and regular seats will cost $3,000.
