The Ministry of Housing and Water plans to start building a concrete bridge at Canal Number One and the Parfait Harmonie Housing Scheme to replace one that has become dilapidated.
A Government Informa-tion Agency press release said contrary to reports in yesterday’s edition of the Kaieteur News, the bridge was built with greenheart wood at a cost of about $25M in 2000 and was given a lifespan of 10 years.
Head of the Presidential Secretariat, Dr Roger Luncheon at Cabinet’s deliberations on October 6 at the Office of the President noted that Cabinet has approved the $80M contract for the execution of emergency works at the Housing Scheme main access bridge.
The new concrete structure will be built within four months and is expected to last for 30 years.
Luncheon said beneficiaries have increased to 38,950 from 27,507 and the bridge would service 9,500 lots compared with the 6,709 it previously served.
The Central Housing and Planning Authority’s engineers are finalizing the bridge’s design.
It is expected to be tendered in three weeks and works are expected to start in December.
