Guyana ended the XIX Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, India, with one medal and on another disappointing note after cyclist Marlon ‘Fishy’ Williams finished 33rd in the Men’s Individual Time Trials yesterday on the Noida Expressway.
Williams finished in a time of 59:22.48 in the 40km cycling event after clocking 24:42.66 at the 20km split.
His final 20km split was markedly slower than his first, clocking 35:82.0 at an average speed of 40.421km.
The time trials were won by David Millar of Scotland in 47:18.66 after a halfway split of 20:59.59 while England’s Alex Dowsett (48:13.48) and Luke Durbrbridge (48:19.22) of Australia were second and third respectively.
Last Sunday, Guyana’s cycling results were not flattering either when Geron Williams placed 31st out of a field of 60 cyclists, eight of whom did not complete the race.
Williams had clocked 3:57:10, seven minutes, 22 seconds off the winner Allan Davis of Australia, who had a time of 3:49:48 at an average speed of 43.864.New Zealand’s Hayden Roulston was second while Millar copped the bronze medal. Guyana’s best performance at the Games came when 400m athlete Aliann Pompey registered the country’s only medal of the championships at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium (JNS).
Pompey clocked 51.65 for the bronze medal in the 400m event and in the process further lowered her previous season-best time of 51.70s, which she ran in the semifinal.
The 2002 Commonwealth Games champion in Manchester, England, ran out of lane five.
The one-lap sprint race was won by Amantle Montsho of Botswana, who had gone into the final with the fastest qualifying time, 50.10s, which set a new Games record. The time erased a 12-year record of 50.17s set by Jamaican Alexandra Richards in 1998 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Nigerian Folashade Abugar, who started out of lane seven, also registered her season-best time of 51.39s to claim the silver medal ahead of Pompey. The country’s rifle shooters Mahendra Persaud and Ransford Goodluck performed creditably but finished just outside of the medals on the penultimate day at the CRPF Campus, Kadarpur.
Persaud and Goodluck placed fifth in the pairs Fullbore Open Stage Three 1000-yard event after scoring 73 points with six V-bulls and 70 points with zero V-bulls respectively.
In the championship rounds Persaud finished with 291 points with 24 V-bulls while Goodluck had 288 points with 18 V-bulls.
The Guyanese contingent is scheduled to return on Sunday.
