The Mayor and City Council (M&CC) has taken a decision to grant amnesty on interest for property rates as it faces a shortfall of over $400M needed to meet its responsibilities.
The facility became available to all rate payers from October 15, 2010. It will close on November 30, 2010. According to the Public Relation Officer Royston King, the period will not be extended.
King explained that the amnesty meant that all interest on the demand will be waived provided rate payers settle their demand in full to benefit the facility. “The council does not have the money yet. It is what is most needed to provide these services and ensure the integrity of the health of the city of Georgetown. This amnesty will assist the council to meet its financial obligations to its employees and other contractors who deliver municipal services to its citizens,” King added.
The City Treasurer will put in place all the appropriate arrangements to minimise waiting time and to ensure that all rate payers are given prompt attention at the department. All property holders, including corporations, companies and businesses, are being urged to take full advantage of this facility.
Last year, the M&CC offered an amnesty to rate payers, when it was faced with a similar cash crunch.
