Parents, students launch protest over condition of Vreed-en-Hoop school

Some students and parents of the Vreed-en-Hoop Com-munity High School protested the condition of the institution yesterday.

They said that due to the situation, classes are only held periodically. The major problem is flooding due to high tides, which parents say creates a poor environment for the students. There are also health concerns when the near-by graveyard is usually flooded. They also cited the state of the washrooms and the school generally.

According to Maureen Andrews, a grandparent of a student, even when there is no rain, the school floods. She said that since school opened for the new school year, there have been days when classes were not held.

There were only a few students in the school when Stabroek News visited shortly after 10am yesterday.

When contacted, the Headmistress, Marva Hestick said that she had no comment to make though she said that classes were in session.

“They got school and they ain’t even teaching them,” one parent commented.
