BLOEMFONTEIN, South Africa, (Reuters) – Colin Ingram became the first South African to score a century on his one-day international debut as the hosts beat Zimbabwe by 64 runs yesterday.
Ingram, 25, batted at number three in place of the injured Jacques Kallis and scored a well paced 124 runs from 126 deliveries as South Africa piled up 351-6 in their 50 overs in the first ODI.
Opener Brendan Taylor did his best to keep the Zimbabweans in the game with a spirited 145 not out from 136 balls but the gulf in class between the teams was always evident as they finished on 287-6.
Opener Hashim Amla laid the foundations for the win with a swashbuckling knock of 110 from only 96 balls, including 14 boundaries. David Miller finished things off in style for the home side with a carefree 51 from 31 deliveries containing, five fours and two sixes. Fast bowler Shingirai Masakadza summed up the Zimbabweans’ day with a career best, if expensive, haul of four for 86.
