Guyana’s Aliann Pompey had her Commonwealth Games bronze medal upgraded to a silver medal following a positive dope test by Nigeria’s Folashade Abugan.
Abugan was subsequently stripped of her two silver medals after testing positive for a banned stimulant games officials said yesterday.
Abugan who had placed second in the Women’s 400m also won a silver medal in the Women’s 4x400m event.
According to a release from John Eades, Operations Director of the Commonwealth Games Federation, Abugan “returned an adverse analytical finding from a test conducted on October 8, 2010, after competing in the women’s 400 metre final.”
“Ms Abugan’s “A” sample was found to demonstrate findings consistent with an exogenous origin of endogenous steroids,” Eades stated.
“The delta values indicate an application of testosterone prohormone, which is prohibited under the current WADA Prohibited List S1 Anabolic Agents,” Eades wrote. It was disclosed that Abugan wrote to the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) waiving her rights to have her “B” sample analysed and a hearing, as provided for within the CGF Anti-Doping Standard (ADS).
She also admitted liability. Abugan has subsequently been disqualified from all events she participated in during the games, with the results nullified.
The bronze medal will now go to Christine Amertil of the Bahamas while the Women’s 4 x 400 metre relay silver medal will now be awarded to England and the bronze medal to Canada. Eades said the official results for both the Women’s 400 metres final and the Women’s 4×400 metres relay will be adjusted accordingly adding that the collection and redistribution of medals directly to the concerned Commonwealth Games Associations (CGA) will be done shortly.
