The Guyana Sugar Corporation this afternoon said it was “extremely alarmed” at a threat made in the name of an official of the sugar union, GAWU for workers to go on an industry-wide strike from tomorrow.
In a press release, GuySuCo urged workers to let better sense prevail. According to a report in today’s Guyana Times which reported the threat, workers intended to apply pressure on the corporation over wages and salaries negotiations.
GuySuCo has had a dismal production year and at a meeting with the sugar unions on Tuesday, Chairman Dr Nanda Gopaul lamented the low attendance rate by harvesters which was impacting on output.
