Ron Motilall is the new junior chess champion of Guyana. Motilall yesterday dethroned defending champion Cecil Cox (junior) in a three-game, tie-break set of matches where he had the advantage of playing with the white pieces twice.
The two players had ended the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) seven round Closed Swiss System tournament on five points each forcing the three-game tie-break.
Tournament Director Irshad Mohammed, asked why the Bucholz or some other tie-break system was not used at the end of the seven rounds to determine the champion told Stabroek Sport that the federation did not like to use such a system to determine the outcome of a national championships.
“We were trying not to use such measures to determine something of this nature especially not the national title,” he said.
“Most other federations decide on a playoff,” Mohammed added.
With the white pieces Motiall was able to win the first game where each player was allotted 15 minutes after Cox blundered away a knight, Mohammed reported.
In the second game Cox had the advantage of two pawns going into the endgame with a bishop and four pawns as to a bishop and two pawns by Motilall but allowed Motilall to hold on for a draw.
The third and final game was also drawn.
Suhai Feng with four and one half points took the third spot while Rashad Hussain was fourth.
Raan Motilall and Sham Khan with three points each occupied the joint fifth position while Carlos Petterson with two and one half points was seventh and Ryan Mc Kay, who failed to earn a point, eighth.
Mohammed said the presentation will be done at a later date.
