The General Secretary of the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union, Seepaul Narine this morning said that sugar workers across the country have proceeded on strike.
A picketing exercise is also to be held in the Berbice region. Workers have struck over wages negotiations. The extent of the strike is still to be determined.
Yesterday the Guyana Sugar Corporation appealed to the workers to let better sense prevail and not to proceed on strike. Sugar production for the year so far has been dismal and the corporation last week met with the sugar unions and pointed out that attendance by harvesters was averaging 57% and this was sometimes leaving the factories without cane during this critical grinding period.
