Doodnauth Sookraj, 40, and Nigel Wright, 33, who were hospitalized on Sunday evening following separate accidents, succumbed to their injuries early yesterday morning.
According to reports, Sookraj, called ‘Jack,’ a security guard and father of one of Lot 171 First Street, Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara (ECD) passed away some time after 1 am yesterday at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Sookraj, who was employ-ed by United Associates Security Service, was travelling to his worksite at the Cyril Potter College of Education (CPCE) on his motorcycle CF 5422 when the accident occurred. He was in the vicinity of the Graham’s Hall Primary School on the Railway Line Embankment around 10 pm, when he was struck by a taxi, HB 3596. He sustained injuries to the head and relatives noted on Sunday evening that he was bleeding from the nose.
His widow Savitri told Stabroek News yesterday that he remained unconscious until his death. She said hospital staff had given her husband a slim chance of survival as his injuries were said to be severe.
Relatives told this newspaper that the driver of the car disappeared from the scene while his brother, who was a passenger in the vehicle at the time of the accident, was in police custody. According to eyewitness, Sukraj was hit off his bike by the car which attempted to turn into a street along the roadway. Sukraj was hurled several metres away from the point of impact while the driver of the vehicle and three females who were in the vehicle at the time fled. Police last evening said the driver was in custody assisting with the investigation.
Reports are that the occupants of the car had moments earlier returned from an outing. An eyewitness said they were dressed in swim wear. The mangled motorcycle and the car were parked in the compound of the Sparendaam Police Station yesterday.
Meanwhile, Wright, of Lot 14 Company Road, Buxton, ECD, died some time before 4 am yesterday while undergoing treatment. He was rushed to the GPH around 10:30 pm on Sunday, after he was struck down by a car, PMM 6782, reportedly driven by a police officer.
The man’s uncle said that his nephew was standing on the roadway close to the East Ruimveldt Police Outpost when he was hit by the car. According to reports, he was hurled into the air and landed close to a bridge in the area.
Wright sustained severe head injuries and relatives noted yesterday that a thorough investigation should be undertaken by the police to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Wright’s father passed away when he was a child, his aunt Barbara Wright said and she had brought him up. She said the police had arrested the driver of the vehicle but he was released some time after Wright was admitted to the hospital. Last evening, police said the driver was in custody assisting with the investigation.
