A man accused of having a firearm and a quantity of ammunition in his possession without licence was yesterday remanded to prison when he appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
The allegation is that on October 15 at Georgetown, Akbar Ali of 269 Industry, East Coast Demerara, had in his possession one 12-gauge pump action shotgun. On the same day also, Ali is accused of having in his possession seventeen 12-gauge cartridges.
He pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Prosecutor Lionel Harvey in giving the facts of the case said that on the day in question, police acting on information were summoned to Cummings Lodge and the accused was apprehended with the shotgun and cartridges.
Harvey told the court that a search was conducted on Ali’s person, which led to the man’s subsequent arrest.
The accused was remanded to prison. His matter was transferred to the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court for hearing on October 25.
