Moments after inflicting a beating on his reputed wife, the 45-year-old caretaker of the Sundarban Cattle Ranch at Georgia Pasture, Cane Grove, Mahaica drowned after the tractor he was driving toppled into a trench.
Edgar Khan, a resident of Lethem, Rupununi died during efforts by several workers to free him from beneath the machine. The incident occurred around 11 am, a short distance from the entrance to the ranch.
A senior police officer informed this newspaper that Khan and his reputed wife had a heated argument during which the woman was beaten. An angry Khan then reportedly jumped into the tractor and according to the police officer the man lost control of the tractor which toppled into a trench. Khan managed to drive about 150 metres around a bend before the mishap occurred.
According to the police officer the body was subsequently removed by Lyken’s Funeral Home and a post-mortem examination is expected to be done today.
When this newspaper arrived at the ranch, persons who said they knew the couple stated that they did not have details about what took place. They said that the man’s reputed wife went to give a statement to the police and she might have gone to stay with relatives in the city.
This newspaper was unable to contact the woman.
A relative of Khan who was present at the time of the visit said that she did not want to say anything. Police are continuing investigations into the circumstances surrounding the man’s death.
