A woman in protest at her daughter being remanded to prison on an armed robbery charge yesterday sat in the middle of the road in front of the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court, obstructing the smooth flow of traffic.
Although police officers and public-spirited citizens tried to remove her she refused, putting herself in danger of being hit by passing vehicles.
While throwing herself in front of any passing vehicle, she lamented that it was unfair for her daughter to be remanded.
“I want justice fuh me daughter, she shouldn’t be on remand, this is unfair to me and me daughter,” she cried repeatedly. The woman was on the road from around 9:30 am but some two hours later, without the aid of those who had earlier tried to persuade her to remove, she calmly got up and went away.
Her daughter Sharon Smith is accused of being armed with a knife on October 3 and robbing Lochanie Narine of one cell phone valued $40,000.
Smith appeared at the Georgetown
Magistrate’s Court on October 4 and was read the charge of robbery under arms by acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry. She was remanded to prison until yesterday and was subsequently told by the magistrate that she would be further remanded.
