A 10-year-old girl of a Berbice village is now in hospital after she was raped on Monday afternoon while returning home from school and police are hunting for her attacker.
The perpetrator fled after committing the act among some bushes, leaving his bicycle behind.
Reports are that the girl’s mother had asked the man to pick her up from school on his bicycle and take her home but he instead took her to a bushy area in the village and raped her.
Stabroek News learnt that two youths noticed the girl passing on the bicycle with the man and shortly after they heard screams coming from among the bushes.
Not realizing it was the girl the youths decided to investigate the source of the noise. By the time they got there the girl was already violated.
As they approached the scene, the attacker heard them talking and immediately abandoned his bicycle and ran.
According to reports the child put up a struggle with the man and sustained scratches about her face and neck. She was also screaming for help at the top of her voice.
